Just when you thought 2021 couldn’t get any stranger, a new viral trend has emerged from an unlikely duo, Tony Hawk and rapper Lil Nas X. Hawk has released a limited run of skateboards with his blood mixed in the paint, and after an Instagram comment from rapper Lil Nas X, the pair have started an online trend of commenting the phrase “nah he tweakin” under social media posts.

In March of this year, Lil Nas X collaborated with streetwear company MSCHF to release the ‘Satan’ Air Max 97’s, a modification on the Nike shoe with added satanic elements including a drop of human blood. Both MSCHF and Lil Nas X were sued by Nike, after outrage from the conservative community.

So when Tony Hawk posted a promo on Instagram for his new ‘blood board,’ the rapper was left feeling hard done by, after facing immense backlash following his use of blood and satanic imagery. He voiced this frustration in classic millennial fashion with the simple phrase “nah he tweakin.” Since then, social media uses have flooded Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with the same comment, leaving many confused and many others entertained.

While Lil Nas X was trying to point out the double standard he faces as a black and queer artist, he probably also helped spread the message for Hawk’s product, which does have a good cause at the centre. There will only be 100 ‘Bloodboards’ made, with a portion of sales being donated to charities working to alleviate plastic pollution, and also build skate parks in low-income communities.
